Tanzania’s Wildlife

Tanzania has a rich wildlife, with over 20% of Africa’s large mammal population. Almost a third of the country is protected providing habitat for scores of species across 16 national parks. As well as the BIG five ( (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo) you can also witness the great migration, one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in the world, where herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle traverse the savanna in pursuit of water and new grasslands.

Tanzania offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness and adventure opportunities making it a popular destination for travellers and safari enthusiasts. Tanzania’s wildlife is diverse and abundant with many species of large mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Get to Know Tanzania a little bit more

The Great Migration in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is one of the world’s most impressive natural spectacles, involving the annual movement of over 1.2 million wildebeests, 300,000 zebras, and other animals. The migration is a circular journey, covering a distance of approximately 800-1,000 km, in search of food and water. The wildebeests begin their journey in the south of the Serengeti, giving birth to over 400,000 calves between January and March. The herds then move northwest toward the central Serengeti, gathering in large columns and attracting predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs. By May, the wildebeests begin to cross the Grumeti River, facing dangerous waters and crocodiles. The herds continue their journey north, entering Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve around July or August. The return journey begins in October, with the herds passing through the eastern Serengeti and returning to the southern Ndutu calving grounds by December. The Great Migration is a spectacle that includes dramatic river crossings, predator-prey interactions, and the endless pursuit of grass and water.
